International and Vietnamese music specialists discussed research findings on local music and culture at the Vietnamese Institute for Musicology in Ha Noi on Friday. The discussions were organised as part of activities at two symposiums, one on music and minorities and the other on applied ethno-musicology, held in collaboration with the International Council for Traditional Music and running until Wednesday.

Two annual symposiums connected with the International Council of Traditional Music (ITCM) will be hosted in Ha Noi on July 30. The sixth ICTM Music and Minorities Study Group and the second Applied Ethno-musicology Study Group symposium will host 87 representatives from 30 countries and territories around the world.

Participants at the meeting of the 8th tenure of Viet Nam Musicians Association shared the view that the organisation should further co-operate with television to promote more newly composed works. The association also developed its orientations for musical development in the new term (2010-15), in which it aims to establish an advanced and professional music environment full of traditional identity, and humanity.

The traditional love duet singing of northern province of Bac Ninh has been officially recognised as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, while ca tru (chamber music) has been listed as a cultural heritage in need of urgent protection by the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
