Colombian Beats: Percussion workshop at Vietnam National Academy of Music Date: December 12-14, 2012
In order to strengthen relations between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Republic of Colombia through culture, the Colombia´s Ministry of Foreign Affairs arranges the musical project “Colombian beats “ in Hanoi presenting the workshop given by the Colombian maestro Samuel Torres, widely recognized as a virtuoso at home and abroad. Composer/Artists Samuel Torres (Colombia) Samuel Torres is an academic musician and percussionist, with a degree in Musical Composition from Bogotá´s Javeriana University. He settled in New York and spent more than four years playing alongside the well-known trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, and his charismatic performances led to him to work with major figures in jazz, Latin pop and salsa, such as Tito Puente, Paquito D´Rivera, Chick Corea, Lila Downs and Shakira – to mention only a few. His music, permeated with the experience of hundreds of tours and concerts given around the world, combine the aesthetics of Latin Jazz with elements of Colombian folk music, African sound, Cuban music, salsa and funk. Maestro Samuel Torres workshops are addressed to music students interested in deeper studies related to percussion and Latin American rhythm. He spents two days with Jazz section of Vietnam National Academy of Music. He talked and gave instruction on the following issues: Basic to Advanced Hand Percussion Techniques Colombian Rhythms Applied to Standard Percussion Instruments Contemporary Percussion Style Jazz lecturers and students at the workshop “Colombian Beats” is part of the Plan for the Promotion of Colombia Abroad and its purpose is to set up an active dialogue with participants through musical pedagogy, showing the riches and diversity of Colombian rhythms and a close relationship with percussion instruments.
