Established in 1956, VNAM has been the first and biggest professional music training institution in Viet Nam.

Viet Nam National Academy of Music (the former Hanoi National Conservatory of Music) was founded in 1956 and has been the first and biggest professional music training institution of country and southeast region, focusing on music performance, research and training. Professional music training covers from secondary level up to Undergraduation, Master and Doctorate. Approximately 1400 students are now enrolled in about 40 different music courses and programs. Teaching staff consists of above 300 lectures, including 5 Professors and 20 Associate Professors, 16 Doctors, 4 People’s Teachers, 16 Teachers of Merit, 12 People’s Artists, 39 Artists of Merit) who are the leading and prestigious professional music educators of the country. International students from Laos, Sweden, Korea, Japan… are joining various music courses in the Academy. Viet Nam National Academy of Music (VNAM) is the first institution in country to provide Doctorate music programs. For many decades, VNAM graduates have contributed the majority of music performers, music teachers, musicologists, composers and conductors of Vietnam. Many of them won high awards in national and international music competitions. VNAM has been developing its close relationships with many  international music associations and conservatories in Europe, Asia, America such as Moscow State Conservatory "Tchaikovsky" (Russia), Paris Conservatory (France), Beijing Conservatory of Music and Shanghai Conservatory of Music (China), Queensland University School of Music (Australia), Malmo Academy of Music (Sweden), Academy of Performance Arts (Hong Kong), Asian Youth Orchestra, Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra, Nagoya Orchestra (Japan). VNAM is also maintaining collaborations with many music organizations and associations including CIM, CIMF, FIJM, JOC, ICTM, ASEA-UNINET...

Many international lecturers, artists, conductors, chamber music ensembles, symphony orchestras from the United States, Austria, Germany, Russia, France, Sweden, Japan… participate in teaching and performing at VNAM annually. VNAM teaching staff and performers also receive invitations to cooperate or take part in concerts in Russia, France, Great Britain, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Italia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore… Through annual auditions, VNAM sends outstanding music students to perform in international symphony orchestras: Asian Symphony Orchestra, Asian Youth Orchestra, Asian Pacific Music Festival (Japan), Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra (Thailand), The 21st Century Orchestra (Japan)…

The leading teaching and performing staff from VNAM, accompany with talented students, has contributed significant roles in national music concerts and events. Annually, VNAM’s Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Music Orchestra, Choir and Vietnamese Traditional Music Orchestra have many various music concerts, help popularizing music to community in the country and bringing Vietnamese traditional music to the world. 

For many years, teachers and students from VNAM have won number of awards in International music competitions: People’s Artist Dang Thai Son won the first prize in Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw (Poland) in 1980; Artist of Merit Ton Nu Nguyet Minh was awarded the 3rd prize in Smetana International Piano Competition in Prague (Republic of Czech). 

Ha Noi Philharmonic Orchestra of the Academy has been awarded the Grand Prix by Japanese Royal Council for young talent supporting.  Recently,VNAM students won international prizes and awards in music competitions in Poland, France, Italia, Czech, Switzerland, Greece, Russia, Hungary, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, the USA, Australia, China, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore… Most recently, Do Phuong Nhi won the first prize in Norway’s Violin Sparre Olsen Competition in 2015 and Tran Le Quang Tien won the first prize in the VI international violin competition for young talents in Kazakhstan in 2016...
